The PhD program in Rhetoric and Composition prepares graduates for careers as writing specialists in higher education, business, industry, and government. The student will receive email confirmation from the Graduate School after the format has been approved. Students with an MA in Literature, an MAT in English, an MFA in Creative Writing, or an MA in a related field (such as Communication or Linguistics) will also be considered. In business, industry, and government, they apply higher-level research, thinking, and writing skills to enhance communication. We study language use and rhetorical activity in public, academic, corporate, and governmental settings in a collective effort to engage pressing social and cultural issues through academic discourse, public policy, and community outreach. Rhetoric and Writing (PhD) The Rhetoric and Writing doctoral program aims to prepare the next generation of leaders in the discipline of Rhetoric and Writing across all areas of a higher-education career: research, teaching, outreach, and national and institutional service. They will be required to complete the six-hour thesis requirement for the MA degree. A dissertation involving extended research is required. Our faculty do work in community literacies, risk communication, health and medical rhetorics, second language pedagogies, intercultural rhetoric, service-learning, and user-experience. Upon finishing this degree, they will complete the additional work required in the PhD program. The PhD program’s emphasis on intercultural writing on the U.S.-Mexican border will lead many students to elect Spanish to satisfy this requirement. Students have opportunities to extend their knowledge of Rhetoric and Composition by taking courses in other disciplines such as Literature, Communications, Languages and Linguistics, and Teacher Education. Coursework The doctoral program introduces the student to the teaching of writing, the history of rhetoric, current issues and research methods in rhetoric and composition, contemporary theories of interpretation, and interconnections among literature, rhetoric, and composition. Another key criterion will be the compatibility between students’ interests and expectations and the objectives of the PhD program.
