Laurel Fantauzzo is the author of the nonfiction book The First Impulse and co-editor of the anthology Press: 100 Love Letters. He teaches creative writing at Louisiana State University. In truth, there is no better choice I have ever made for myself than to spend those three years, and to it I owe the best years of my life and everything good that has happened since.. Thats the first time I really felt like a writer, and felt exhilarated by the challenges of the craft.. But when it came down to making the decision, I tried to follow a deeper current in me that trusted that somehow my relationship to expression and artistic endeavor was going to be my work, however serious that work would turn out to be. Horn herself was living in Iceland during this time period, and making work that was often concerned with ice. Whatever the questions are that were interested in, if we pursue those broadly, then we get more from it. Suddenly, things started to click together, so I started writing another book that was addressing what these changes meant and trying to write about time, movement, and movement across land, which the House With Door essay ends up as part of. When I was leaving Iowa, a classmate said softly: Its time to leave the magic for someone else. I still borrow that line whenever anyone asks me about Iowa; I sayit was magic. I dont know how else to explain Iowa to anyone who has not lived and written there. So there were a couple years of writing that and I was getting it to something that was close to being done and then a few things happened. Here at Columbia, I get to teach classes that are passions and interests of mine and I get to work with students that really want to be in those classes. The journal is a really great form and in nonfiction, it gets discounted a bit; people think of it as a private thingwhich is weird because were already dealing with personal essays and this relationship between the private and the public. Its the corn, the affordability, the quiet. Clinton Crockett Peters is the author of the book Pandoras Garden: Kudzu, Cockroaches, and Other Misfits of Ecology, which Elena Passarello described as a compelling bestiary of overlooked and misunderstood individuals. His essays and fiction have appeared in numerous journals, including Orion, Southern Review, Texas Monthly, Catapult, Electric Literature, The Rumpus, and Fourth Genre. In grad school, I encountered lots of writers who were and are important to me and I learned to situate myself in this contemporary writing world and understand some places that I might inhabit. And the NWP taught me all that. He repeated the order. When I joined the University of Iowa's Nonfiction Writing Program, I knew I was writing some mutant variety of nonfiction, but I didnt know that I was actually writing essays. Most of the jobs that are available after graduation are adjuncting jobs or teaching composition, but my interest is really working with people on the actual writing process, in part because its very tied to my own writing practice and my ideas about activism and political engagement. Probably a few months past, I decided I was going to try and make it into its own little essay. As a graduate student, I might devote an entire afternoon to unraveling a Nabokovian sentence, then discuss the same with a dozen fellow writers. The dream of almost every journalist is to go deeper into their writing, and the Nonfiction Writing Program helped me make that turn.. Before joining the Nonfiction Writing Program, Jon Anderson was a longtime staff member of the Chicago Tribune, for which he wrote the now-legendary bi-weekly "City Watch" column. Her work has appeared in Brainchild, Habitat, and The Lab Review. Those inquisitive and careful voices from the students and faculty of the Nonfiction Writing Program follow me around even now, years after completing my MFA. Her essays have appeared in the the New York Times Sunday Book Review,Harper's, BookForum,the New Republic, Esquire, and elsewhere. I kept at these questions with a PhD in English, but the seed, a vibrant, nourished seed, was planted in the NWP.. . My self-respect grew out of my teachers respect for me. That shift has been really important to me and I hope to be able to offer that to other people. My time at the NWP began by chance. These are reason enough to pack up your life and head toward the cornfields. My book, Pandoras Garden, grew out of my thesis, but it took me seven years from its inception to finish. All of us were free to explore nonfiction as we wanted, and yet we were also encouraged to examine the history of the genre as well as its possibilities. As a magazine journalist, I could not afford to spend an hour pouring over a paragraph I admired. There were readings in bars of literary fame and on make-shift stages in floodlit backyards. Regardless of how different those things might seem, if youre really looking at them consistently through the lens of the self, then you find that they are connected, if only because its you that are interested in them. I found out through the research I was doing and through Flix Gonzlez-Torress archives that Torres partially dealt with this loss through his close friendship with the artist Roni Horn. I like to think that I left Iowa with a much clearer understanding of what fully-realized, artistic work can look like, a perspective that's helped me better perceive the shortcomings in my own writing. I was writing pyrotechnic lyric essays at the time and wanted to learn, most basically, how to craft narrative and how to make my work with language sustainable, more accessible to others, and somehow more substantial. In my position as a professor and low-residency MFA director now, I use what I learned at Iowa daily.. I can't think of anyone in these islands who writes like the American essayist Amy Leach, with such mad, magical exuberance and whimsy. And now, I think of it much differently. I developed lifelong skills, and lifelong friends. Whenever I talk to a lucky acquaintance in New York who has gotten in to the program and is hesitant about moving to Iowa, I just tell them: Youre an idiotyouve gotta go. There are definitely times where I sit down and think, I dont know what Im going to write today. And there are times where I sit down and Im really excited and plowing forward. Do you consciously blend genres or do you unconsciously inhabit this space that is all and in between and undefinable? For a lot of writers, though, the passions and the interests arent so intimately tied to questions of genre and form and hybridity; the question really is more of, you know, what does it mean to be a white person writing in this racially fucked up society that we now have? What I learned while studying in the Nonfiction Writing Program was how to seehow to sit and observe and really be present for something. When the classes are in that generative, collaborative mode, I feel like it fuels my own writing, gives me new ideas, and its more active and useful for the students. . How do you take those raw, natural things pulled directly from your lived experience and incorporate them into an essay when youre writing in a journal-like form? I always stopped and stared. I thought about quitting. It has to come in at that level of instinct. If Im drawn to write about something, even if it seems like its going to be super boring, I try to trust that I am drawn to it for a reason and that something will be revealed to me by trusting those instincts. At Iowa I recognized that bad writing can and will come from a good essay, but also that bad' and good' are somewhat malleable and that this is where revision and confidence must balance each other.. So our private obsessions and interests warrant themselves in the writing eventually. For me, its a community that is still very much a part of my life.. Ryan recently published his first book, If You Knew Then What I Know Now, which was a finalist for a Lambda Literary Award and hailed by New York magazine as one of the years best. What I also learned quickly at Iowa is that this genre is boundless. Riley Hanicks first book, Three Kinds of Motion: Kerouac, Pollock, and the Making of American Highways, weaves three distinct stories into one improbable narrative about American history and identity. I was reading Montaigne and Jenny Boully and Maggie Nelson and talking to new friends about Montaigne and Boully and Nelson and what an essay is, or could be. It was a tough choice; I was trying to figure out what would lead to the most meaningful work. But if you look at those questions as they are approached in a multitude of genres and different time periods, nationalities, languages, and literary traditions, then you learn a lot more and your writing becomes a lot more exciting. The writer on seeking queer lineage, public sex as collective defiance, and autobiography as accumulation. You will come out of the program a more generous reader, a more equipped teacher, a more dedicated researcher, a more passionate journalist, and a more lyrical writer. My time in the NWP was an incredible gift there are few opportunities in life when all available resources are poured into your creative development but for three years, I got to pursue every idea, form, voice, subject and style of writing that I was interested in and then receive feedback from a community that passionately cared about the art of the essay. Do I really want to do this? I try to write most every day and to write from a very immediate space; whatever enters into my life naturally is what ends up on the page. And this second book that Im writing feels more ambitious. Im not necessarily sitting down and saying, Im writing todays journal about such-and-such that happened, but I am trying to generate new content that is drawn directly from my lived experience, whatever that might be. I arrived in Iowa City as a disillusioned journalist; I left as a writer and teacher of literary nonfiction. What was most useful for me as a student was some sort of connection between the person teaching the class and how that person was conceiving their own writing in the world and their own writing practice. It was a remarkable time that changed the direction of my writing and so, also, changed the direction of my life.. I dont believe I could return to that place where Syzygy came from.
